Flood watch issued for Smithers, Houston area

The BC River Forecast Centre has upgraded the high streamflow advisory for the Smithers and Houston area to a flood watch.

A similar notice has been issued by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, Witset First Nation, Town of Smithers, Village of Telkwa, and District of Houston.

According to the centre, the watch means river levels are rising and could reach or spill over riverbanks.

This is due to hot temperatures and snow melt in the area.

The centre said fast flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety and to stay away from rivers and riverbanks.

High stream flow advisories for the Lakes and Omineca regions remain in effect.
