Dze L K’ant held two grand openings in Houston on Wednesday with its new Friendship Centre facility and Cub House.
The new centre received funding in 2021 from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Rural and Northern Communities Program to demolish it’s former building, which became the site of its new facility.
“This building is more than just infrastructure; it is an expression of our inherent responsibility to care for our people and our future generations,” said executive director Annette Morgan.
The society said the former building needed replacing due to aging infrastructure with the new facility designed to serve as a hub for connection, belonging, and healing.
Construction started in 2025, with additional funding coming from the Northern Development Initiative Trust, Employment and Social Development Canada, National Association of Friendship Centres, BC Association of Friendship Centres, and Community Gaming Grants of BC.
“By supporting community-led infrastructure projects like this, our government is helping communities meet local needs and build a stronger future,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
“I congratulate everyone whose vision and dedication made this milestone possible,” she added.
In addition, the society opened its Cub House, which is its first Aboriginal Head Start Childcare facility.
