Investigation underway into RCMP interaction that left a woman in Williams Lake with serious injuries

An incident in Williams Lake where a woman was injured is now the subject of an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C.

The initial report states that the affected person had an interaction with bylaw officers and city staff in a city park back on May 8, 2026.

RCMP officers were also called to the area and advised the woman that she needed to leave the park.

At one point during an interaction with the woman and a police officer, she sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The Independent Investigation Officer of B.C. was notified of the incident on July 3 by the Police Accountability Unit of the BC First Nations Justice Council.

Investigators are now seeking witnesses.

The IIO looks into all incidents where there has been an interaction with RCMP that results in serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death.

The chief civilian director will then consider at the end of the investigation if there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
