New childcare spaces set to serve families south of Francois Lake

A new daycare is set to open in Grassy Plains, south of Burns Lake, bringing 43 new childcare spaces to the area.

The Sus’an Yaz daycare centre is located with Grassy Plains School and will be operated by Carrier Sekani Family Services.

It will include 10 licensed spaces for infants and toddlers, 17 for children up to five years old, and 16 before and after school care spaces for school aged children.

“There is an ongoing shortage of child care in Northern BC. This opening represents a shared commitment to investing in the future of our children and families,” said Janet Whitford, Chief of Cheslatta Carrier Nation.

The centre is done in partnership with School District 91, Cheslatta Carrier Nation, Nee Tahi Buhn and Skin Tyee Nation, with funding from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

“Sus’an Yaz daycare centre is open to all ethnicities and our programming embraces diversity and encourages cultural exchange,” says Dawne Persson, CSFS Director of Early Childhood Development.

The facility will start operating once final licensing is complete, with registration open at the Grassy Plains School.
