New mammography machine being fundraised for in Smithers

A new campaign to raise $1 million for a new mammography machine has been started by the Bulkley Valley Health Care and Hospital Foundation.

It is being done in partnership with Northern Health, with a new machine able to provide clearer images, faster exams, and enhanced breast cancer diagnostic capabilities.

“This investment is not only about equipment, it’s more about mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, friends, and neighbours,” said Interim Executive Director Margaret Groves.

The new machine would be installed at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital, providing services to residents from Topley to Witset, and beyond.

The idea started after a conversation with the hospital brought up the current mammography machine would be needing replacement in the next couple of years.

“We just thought, why wouldn’t we just start raising money now? A million dollars is a huge undertaking so it will definitely take some time to hit our goal,” said Groves.

An upcoming fundraiser which will be contributing to the goal is the foundation’s annual gala on October 17.

“We have Ryan Michael Magician from Kelowna coming up as a mentalist to be our entertainer this year,” Groves said.

Tickets for the gala can be purchased by contacting the foundation.

Other fundraising events and opportunities will be announced in the next few months.
