New multi-use path under construction in Houston

Construction is underway on a new connector from Jamie Baxter Park to Mountainview Drive in Houston.

It is to build a new multi-use path to replace the previous stairway which reached end of life according to the district.

“This area has always been kind of a strange access point for residents that live up on the Mountainview Drive area, and people trying to get there from downtown or vice versa,” said Gerald Pinchbeck, Chief Administrative Officer.

The $1.4 million project is entirely grant funded with $500,000 coming from the B.C. Access Transportation program, and the rest from the Resource Benefits Alliance.

Work on the new path started in April with crews currently working on shaping the path to the district’s desired grade, and implementing stormwater management.

“Later on in the summer, people are going to see that we’re starting to bring structural fill onto the site, landscaping work, concrete bases for benches, and eventually paving of the actual trail itself,” said Pinchbeck.

He added some residents were surprised when construction started as several trees on the hill were cleared to make room for the new path.

Pinchbeck said residents also acknowledge the previous stairway wasn’t a workable solution.

The project is expected to wrap up in September.
