Phased demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School underway

Teardown is set to begin at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

According to School District 59, work on the exterior of the building is slated to start today (Monday).

Six children and two women were killed at the school in February.

Staged removal of the existing school is expected to take a few more weeks.

After the structure is removed, work will continue through the fall to restore the site to grass.

Demolition waste will be taken to regional landfills and not remain in the community to protect privacy.

Premier David Eby announced in May plans to replace the school are underway, but a new site has not been determined.

Both the federal and provincial governments are committing 200-million dollars for the new facility as well as upgrades to the Tumbler Ridge community health centre.
