Road Safety at Work urging drivers to prepare for darker mornings this winter

With clocks no longer falling back an hour this winter, Road Safety at Work is reminding drivers that morning commutes will be darker.

It adds visibility risks could also increase depending on weather conditions such as fog, rain, and snow, as well as glare from oncoming headlights, making it difficult to see pedestrians, cyclists, and lane markings.

Program Director Trace Acres said “The roads you drive may be familiar but the risks are changing. In darkness or low light, it’s harder to spot hazards on the road and react.”

Prolonged dark mornings can also affect sleep cycles, causing fatigue, heightening the risk, especially when drivers need to be alert on the road.

The organization said drivers, while on the road for work or personal reasons, should slow down when visibility is reduced, watch for cyclists, wildlife, pedestrians and roadside workers, check if your vehicle is in good condition, and be rested before getting behind the wheel.
