Smithers mayor to finish her final term in office

Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill has announced she will not be seeking re-election this fall.

She made the announcement Wednesday evening on Facebook.

“It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to be mayor of Smithers,” Atrill said.

She was first elected onto town council in 2014 and remained in the position until becoming acting mayor in 2019.

Atrill was elected mayor during the 2020 byelection and re-elected in 2022.

“This term has had lots of great initiatives. Many good things have been accomplished and, of course, it has been dotted with difficulties and challenges too,” she said.

“Too all of you who have provided me friendship, guidance, and sometimes a cup of coffee over this term, I want to say thank you. It has meant a great deal.”

The general municipal election will be held on October 17.
