Smithers RCMP saw an uptick in motor vehicle incident calls yesterday (Monday) after winter driving conditions returned.
Police said three calls were responded to early that morning which is above normal, especially because snow clearing had started.
“It’s not uncommon to see an increase in collisions when weather conditions shift quickly from spring-like temperatures back to winter conditions,” Mounties said.
The RCMP added drivers can become less cautious with the warmer weather while unexpected icy and hazardous conditions are still possible.
Environment Canada says freezing temperatures are expected overnight for the next week which Mounties added could lead to slippery conditions.
Police are reminding drivers to:
- Slow down and adjust speed for conditions
- Increase following distance
- Watch for icy patches, especially in the morning and evening
- Ensure vehicles are equipped for winter driving
- Plan ahead, allowing extra travel time
- Remain attentive to road conditions
“Even when conditions seem mild, winter driving hazards can return quickly and without warning,” Officers said.
