Smithers Soccer team comes second at provincial championship

The Bulkley Valley (BV) United U17 soccer team brought home silver from the BC Youth Provincial B-Cup championship in Kamloops.

They took the spot after losing 2-1 against Okanagan FC in the final.

“Even if we came in with a good feeling, I don’t think anyone really expected us to be in the final,” said head coach Daniel Imhof.

“When that happened, we were super excited and after the game, the boys were pretty disappointed.”

He added the team leading up to the tournament had been successful with various tournament wins, including the Slurpee Cup, also in Kamloops.

BV led the final game before Okanagan tied, with the winning shot being made in the last minute according to Imhof.

The last time he recalled a BV team being in the provincial championship final was in 2007/08.

“I’m really proud of the way they played. They really played the best game they’ve probably ever played in the first half of that final game so there’s really not much more we can ask for,” said Imhof.

Along with players from the Bulkley Valley, four boys on the team were from Prince Rupert.

Imhof said he is looking forward to working with the team moving into U18.
