Temporary closure of West Fraser sawmill in Smithers

West Fraser has announced the temporary shutdown for five sawmills, including the mill in Smithers.

The production curtailments will be in place the last week of June.

“(It will) coincide with other scheduled maintenance at the Smithers operation in an effort to mitigate the impact to our employees and to provide certainty for those affected by this decision,” said Brian Balkwill, our VP of Canadian Wood Products.

He added the temporary curtailments are a response to the challenging market conditions for BC operations that have unfortunately remained in place since late last year.

A news release states they will reduce production by 30-million board feet.

Sawmills in Chetwynd, Quesnel, Williams Lake, and Fraser Lake will also see curtailments.
