Traffic stop leads to five charges against Smithers man

Five charges have been approved against a Smithers man after a vehicle bearing an inactive licence plate was found.

Smithers RCMP said it assisted the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) with the investigation on Sept. 10 which appeared to be a routine traffic matter.

Police said both teams worked to identify the alleged driver, determining he was prohibited from driving and found ammunition in his possession.

The man’s charges include driving while suspended, two counts of driving while prohibited, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

The matter has been referred to the courts.

Officers add a common question the Smithers detachment receives is how it works with the BCHP, highlighting this investigation as an example.

Police said BCHP officers focus on driving behaviours contributing to serious injuries and deaths on B.C. roads and help with the high volume of traffic complaints received in the community.
