UPDATE: Plenty of ways to help Fire Victims

Relief efforts continue to pour in to help yesterday’s fire victims.

Rayz Boardshop is offering an exclusive sale for those who lost their homes. They all get buy-one-get-one-free on regularly marked items and 20% off anything in the cove.

Manager Jade Lachanch says they’re doing this because they “just wanted to help out and give back to the community a little bit … we love our customers so much and we know how difficult it can be to regain all of your stuff.”

Calderwood Realtor Jesse Butler has agreed to donate $1 for every “like” and “share” on his Facebook page, for a maximum of $1000.

Butler said helping out was just the right thing to do.

“It’s hard enough to find a place to rent in Smithers. It was actually my wife that had approached me and she’s the one that managed the Facebook page and said ‘you know what we should really do something for these people’ and i said ‘that’s a great idea.'”

Salvation Army Spokesperson Rick Apperson said he’s already heard from many local residents and businesses.

Apperson asks that people call him (847-1059) before donating to 1065 Main Street and to hold off on giving household goods, furniture, and beds until the Salvation Army has somewhere to store them.

He asks that people call ahead before donating so the Salvation Army can prepare and prioritize the items, saying “everything is going to need to be replaced, but the immediate is housing, food, [and] clothing.”

Apperson and members of “ICare” will be meeting today to discuss a donations management plan. MooseFM will have more details about how to donate after that meeting.

As far as local events go, Boston Pizza Smithers will be putting together a fire victim fundraiser on Saturday, August 8th. It will be a ticketed beer and burger night with live music and auctions.

Anyone who would like to donate for this live or silent auction, or want to get involved with this fundraiser, contact Melissa at 250-847-1054 or bennettm@bostonpizza.com.
