Witset sees mud fly during annual races

The Moricetown Mud Races returned to Witset over the weekend with over 50 vehicles racing through the mud.

The event returned in 2025 as a memorial for Chris Gagnon who originally started the event.

“The mud was a lot thicker this year so a few broken trucks but it comes with entering,” said organizer Charmayne Nikal.

She added the number of entries and attendees was lower than last year due to various reasons with the turnout still being considered a success.

Running the event without Gagnon has been different according to Nikal, with this year being the second it’s run without him.

“We still have all the same volunteers and the team that pulled together so it’s good,” she said.

A highlight of the event for Nikal was the face painting as the people doing it have done so at the races for several years.

“They’ve been painting the same faces since they were four years old, up until now when they’re in their 20s,” she said.

Also happening was the tug of war and foot races on Sunday.

The organizers are aiming to have the event run annually into the future and will know if it’s a go for 2027 later this year.
