Smithers Council holding “Sidewalk to Nowhere” forum tomorrow

The Mayor and some members of Smithers Council are hosting a forum tomorrow to explain how the Town funds municipal infrastructure.

A bylaw requires any property owner who takes out a building permit worth more than $75,000 to bring storefront infrastructure up to the municipal standard. This includes things like curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. North Central Plumbing & Heating’s new location and renovation costs have lead to the lonely sidewalk.

Council and Staff have been looking at ways to update the bylaw, and Mayor Taylor Bachrach wants to hear your ideas as well.

“So far, we haven’t found any alternatives that work any better than the status quo so hopefully, on Thursday I’ll be able to go through some of that and share with people who show up some of the things that we’re considering looking at … Town Council and Town Staff don’t have a monopoly on good ideas and we’re certainly open to hearing from the public on what they’d like to see in our community.”

The forum and free lunch start at noon outside of Town Hall.
