MP Nathan Cullen takes issue with Ocean Protection Plan not including tanker ban

Ottawa will be spending 1.5 billion dollars on a new Ocean Protection Plan to boost marine safety, improved prevention measures and investments in oil spill clean-up.

In the wake of a spill of 100s of thousands of litres of diesel off the coast of Bella Bella, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says the plan leaving out a tanker ban on the north coast is troubling.

“Nor a new coast guard base in Prince Rupert, and gaps in the how to deal with a heavy oil spills. Instead of buying a bigger mop, lets get rid of the risk in the first place,” says Cullen.

Cullen also takes issue with half the money being rolled out after the next election.

Trudeau says the plan will make Canada a world leader in Marine safety.
