Reported vandalism to public property in Telkwa frustrates mayor

Vandals have caused some damage to public infrastructure near Eddy Park in Telkwa.

Mayor Darcy Repen says planters were destroyed along with damage to lights and the washroom sometime Saturday evening.

He says the repairs will cost around $1,500.

“It just really undermines the very essence of why people live here which is that it’s a beautiful place and people deserve to have a few minimal adornments,” says Repen. “it’s just so sad with even those basic things – we can’t seem to keep them going when certain people in the community want to wreck them for us.”

Repen says solar lights were also stolen from a house in the area.

He’s now seeking volunteers to join the Citizens on Patrol program to keep vandals from causing similar destruction in the future. Those interested can contact the village at (250)846-5212.

Repen is also encouraging anyone with information to contact Smithers RCMP at (250) 847-3233.
