Telkwa Council addressing air quality with annual Stove exchange

Telkwa Council will address local air quality at this evening’s meeting.

As part of the annual initiative, Council hopes to again run a wood stove exchange program. Residents could earn $250 by replacing old, wood burning equipment with a new, certified EPA appliance. This would help lower harmful particulate in the air.

A study was taken from 2011 – 2013, and was recently presented to Smithers Council by the Ministry of Environment, shows that the Town, alongside Williams Lake, has the Central Interior’s highest ozone levels.

The study also showed that Smithers had the second worst daily mean of dangerous particulate in the area, behind only Vanderhoof. The Smithers area has also had three air quality advisories since late-November.

Council invites the public to tonight’s meeting. Doors open at 7 PM.
