A fire was discovered Saturday afternoon on a conveyance system at the NEWPRO Mill in Smithers, according to Work Safe BC.
Work Safe BC can’t comment on the severity of the fire, but there were no injuries.
Scott McCloy with Work Safe BC says an investigator was there Tuesday.
“The officer will be following up with the mill for further action. The officer has directed the employer to conduct an investigation into what happened, why it happened and how to prevent it in the future.”
The mill has only recently been started up again.
“An officer was at the mill March 22 this year before the mill reopened. No orders were issued at that time. However, issues of dust management and machine lock-out, confined space procedures were the issues discussed at that time,” says McCloy.
He says the employer is moving forward with the investigation and Work Safe BC should have more information later in the week.
There were plans to have the mill up and running Tuesday.
