Northern BC to experience first blast of winter

It’s November and the first blast of winter will make its way through the Pine Pass along Highway 97 today.

“Temperatures are expecting to slowly slide down, by tonight, we’re looking at a low of -10 with winds gusting as high as 60 kilometres per hour,” says Greg Pearce, Environment Canada Meteorologist.

“We are expecting just a light dusting of snow but the big issue here is that it is the first major arctic outbreak of the year for much of the north.”

A special weather advisory has been issued as a result for most Northern BC regions, including:

  • Bulkley Valley and The Lakes – Northwest including Smithers
  • Bulkley Valley and The Lakes – Southeast including Burns Lake

Pearce adds the chilly conditions will be sticking around for a while.

“We’re looking at below average temperatures here to persist into the early part of next week, highs for this time of year around plus three with the normal low of about minus four so we’re looking at temperatures running roughly about eight to ten degrees below normal for this time of year,” added Pearce.

Drivers are being asked to use caution as some black ice may form on roads and highways due to the colder weather.

It could be windy as well with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h and may produce some blowing snow.

Travellers should prepare for winter conditions and head to Drive BC for the latest road conditions.
