Telkwa Caribou Protection Agreement Signed

The northern caribou is being protected by an agreement between the BC government and a Houston recreational organization.

The province and the Houston Snowmobile Club signed an agreement today to find common ground in creating innovative solutions to protect the caribou population in the Skeena Region, and to ensure recreational snowmobiling activities do not affect their habitat.

The agreement outlines how each party will work together to ensure best-management practices are enforced and that a collaboration-based approach is demonstrated through boundary marking and closing off certain areas to leisurely activity.

The Telkwa mountain range, a favourite destination for alpine enthusiasts, is also home to the Telkwa caribou, a group of local caribou at risk of local extinction.

Currently, there are approximately 22 animals in the herd.
