Council removes some permitted uses allowed in P2 Zone

No one spoke at the public hearing at Smithers council  tonight.
The town would like to change which uses are allowed in the Public Use Two Zone but needed to hear if there were any concerns from residents first.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says seeing that where none, council went ahead and adopted the changes.
“The public use zone has a lot of different uses in it and they range the whole gamut from circus to health centre,” he says. “We wanted to tighten it up a bit and make it clear. The zoning document is one of the most important by-laws. It tells developers and property owners where we want which uses in the community.”
The town has now removed medical centre, municipally owned building, government office and voluntary social service organization from the permitted principal uses.
These changes were made after a controversial re-zone of a property in a residential area last year. Council made a promise to clean up the P2 Zone following that decision.
