Rural Dividend Program to strengthen BC communities

Stikine MLA, Doug Donaldson

The fifth annual BC Rural Dividend Program is back in the province and aims towards making smaller communities better than they already are.

As of June 1st, First Nations groups, non-profits, and local governments will have the opportunity to submit applications for project funding, that will support their community in any way they feel necessary.

Local Stikine MLA and BC Minister for Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development, Doug Donaldson, tells us the significance of providing this funding to smaller communities in BC.

“As a government, we want to continue seeing growth in smaller communities that will make them more appealing. If regions decide to apply for this funding, it will most certainly increase their quality of life and the area they live in. Past recipients of this funding have had nothing but good things to say.”

Single applicants can apply for up to $100,000 for community-driven projects and must contribute at least 20% of the total project cost.

Partnerships, involving an eligible applicant and at least one eligible partner, can apply for up to $500,000 and must contribute 40% of the total project cost.

Donaldson says there are a wide variety of projects that are supported under this funding and the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District have certainly taken advantage of it in the past.

“Most recently, the Town of Smithers received $80,000 to upgrade their perimeter trail, as well as, create an active transportation plan. The district of New Hazelton also received $250,000 in the last intake, for a Northern BC marketing initiative. To round out the examples and show the variety of projects, the Upper Skeena Development Centre received $90,000 to target youth to grow and sustain wild foods within the community.”

In the past, the application period for this process was only one month long, however, due to requests from rural officials, the application period will now be extended to two months. This will ensure that all the groups who want to apply, have the proper time to do so. The deadline for applications is July 31st.
