The Canadian Red Cross is asking boaters to be safe and smart when out on the water this summer.

Regional Manager of Northern and Aboriginal Engagement Becky Row says people need to make sure they have the proper equipment.

Row says children between the ages of 1-4 and men between 15-34 are the most prone to drowning.

She says men account for 83 % of all water related deaths in Canada according to their National Drowning Report.

She says this group is more likely to drink alcohol and not wear a life jacket when boating.
