Bulkley Valley and Lakes District fire departments receive funding from the province

About $30,000 each is going to eight community volunteer fire departments in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District.

This is through the province’s Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, which is providing $6.2 million to volunteer fire groups across the province.

“Many people living in smaller or remote B.C. communities are served by hard-working volunteer or partly volunteer fire departments,” said George Heyman, acting Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

“These departments don’t have the same resources found in larger communities.”

In Smithers, the funding is going towards performing radio communication upgrades.

For New Hazelton, Houston, and Telkwa, funding will be used to purchase and upgrade equipment.

Topley will be using its funding to provide firefighter training and gear.

Quick deploy structure protection equipment is on the way to Southside that was purchased with the funding.

Granisle will be performing some new year updates for its department.

More than 200 volunteer and composite fire departments in the province are receiving funding to perform upgrades, purchase equipment, and provide mental health support.
