Warming centre opens beside Smithers Public Library

A warming centre in Smithers has opened amid recent freezing temperatures.

A tent was set up last night (Wednesday) in the public library parking lot and will be open 24/7 until the cold weather alert passes.

Director of Community Services Will George said wraparound supports are also available at the location.

“Those include supports from the Town of Smithers, Office of the Wet’suert’en, the RCMP, Dze L’ Kant, Northern Health, as well all the participants around the situation table.”

Funding for the emergency shelter was provided through the Province of BC Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

Last year, the library had opened as a warming spot and town council decided against listing them as an emergency warming centre at a meeting in December.
