Funding provided to emergency groups around indigenous culture

Provincial funding is being distributed to several communities for training on indigenous cultural safety and cultural humility.

This includes $30,000 for the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and another $30,000 for the Town of Smithers.

“We have heard that emergency management support can be delivered in a more culturally safe and inclusive way,” said George Heyman, acting Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

“Supporting Indigenous people and communities begins with understanding their history and values.”

They hope the training will help ensure First Nations, Métis and Inuit people are treated with inclusivity and respect during emergencies.

Training for Smithers staff involved with local emergency management will be focused on the cultural aspects and needs of the Wet’suwet’en community.

About $580,000 is being sent to 22 local projects across the province.
