Henhouses and Task force on Smithers’ agenda tonight

Plenty of material on tonight’s Smithers Council agenda.

Councilors will discuss the Animal Control bylaw and will allow residents to keep backyard hens.

This poultry can be kept for personal use, “provided that no neighbourhood health, environmental or nuisance problems result” from them.

Council will discuss further details like the henhouse sizes, an amount of hens allowed and waste management.

Also on the agenda, members will be appointed to the new Small Business Taskforce, which Council has said is one of the top Strategic Priorities for the 2015 – 20188 18 time frame.

There will be five members in the group. The Mayor and one councillor will make up two, and Councillors will decide on the other three from a pool of six applicants.

There will be eight members in the group. Mayor Taylor Bachrach and a councilor to be named will consist of two, a Chamber of Commerce member will be a third, and Council will decide on the other five tonight from a pool of six applicants.

Also on the agenda will be further talks about the Wood Stove Exchange program.

The town hopes to receive a Provincial grant to put towards to exchange, and the Air Shed Management Society committee has ideas where the money can go.

Its plans include air quality education for youth, stronger bylaw monitoring, and “Woodstove stewardship.”

The public is invited to tonight’s meeting at town chambers, beginning at 6:30 PM.
