Road work ahead for northern highways this summer

The BC Government is planning on paving 260 kilometres of Highways and side roads in Northern BC this summer.

According to the province, this includes approximately 28 kilometres of highway and sideroads in the Smithers area.

21 kilometres will be paved on Highway 16 from Witstet to Nouch Road, and seven kilometres of side roads including Old Babine Road, Hudson Bay Mountain Road, and Slack Road.

The $7.5 million project is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.

In addition, 27 kilometres of Highway 37S is being resurfaced from the roundabout at the junction with Highway 16 to Onion Lake, as well as a kilometre along Beam Station Road.

Other major resurfacing projects in the North includes:

  • Highway 97, Chetwynd area – 30 km of conventional asphalt resurfacing,
  • Highway 16, Lasalle Lake to West Twin Bridge – 17 km of conventional asphalt resurfacing,
  • Highway 37, Pinetree Lake to Good Hope – 46 km of graded aggregate seal coat resurfacing,
  • Highway 37, North Stikine Hill – 12 km of graded aggregate seal coat resurfacing,
  • Highway 29, Chetwynd to Cameron Lake – 39 km of hot-in-place recycling asphalt resurfacing,
  • Pineview area sideroads, 35 km of graded aggregate sealcoat resurfacing

According to the province, $53 million is being invested in resurfacing northern highways and local roads this construction season.
