Talks about applying for funding to build a new Smithers Library building are returning to Smithers Council tomorrow night. (Tuesday)
The hope is to try for funding from the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.
The design being brought forward is one created in 2018 which also included space for the Smithers Art Gallery.
The new building would be on Aldous Street with the entire park being redesigned, including a relocation of the cenotaph where the current building is.
In 2019, fundraising started towards the then $16 million project which was meant to cover a portion of the cost.
The rest was planned to be provided through funding from higher levels of government.
The town had applied for grants twice, most recently in 2020, with both failing to draw any funding.
After the two failed attempts, the Smithers Art Gallery pulled out as a partner for the project.
The building project is now expected to cost $24 million.
