Snowfall over the weekend had snow removal crews busy in Smithers.
“They were up at 4:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday clearing snow. They work very hard and are dedicated to keeping our streets clean and clear,” said Communications and Engagement Officer Sam LeBlanc.
According to Environment Canada, about 40 centimetres of snow had fallen in the region at the end of Saturday.
This year, the town doesn’t have an exact snow clearing budget, but LeBlanc said they are prepared to take on the cost.
When snowfall hits, she said the downtown and business areas, along with bus routes are cleared first with other streets being cleared as crews can.
“To ensure efficient operation on those priority routes, there is no parking allowed between 2:00 and 7:00 in the morning,” said LeBlanc.
Crews are working to catch up on any missed sidewalks and roadways with no estimated time for when they will be done.
“It really depends on what the weather does over the next few days if we get more snow or if it’s all going to be melting,” she said.
A form can be found on the town’s website to request service, or can call the operations department at (250) 847-1649.
