Smithers Donates to Red Cross Fort McMurray Effort

The Red Cross has been collecting money from across the country to help the evacuated people of Fort McMurray pick up the pieces after a massive fire ravaged their city.

So far, the people of Smithers have stepped up and raised over $5,800 in donations for the Red Cross through Safeway.

They’re dedicated to matching $100,000 in donations. And as Safeway Manager Matt Hexter explains, they’ll keep collecting donations for as long as possible.

“We won’t stop until we’re told to. I’ve never worked in a town as good as Smithers when it comes to the community jumping in like this,” says Hexter.

He says all the money they’re raising will go directly to the Red Cross.

“A three dollar donation gets a comfort kit for someone in need – 10 dollars provides a blanket, 35 dollars provides three meals for an impacted person and 40 dollars provides a cot for someone in one of the shelters,” says Hexter.

Safeway will also be sending $100,000 worth of product to the affected areas.
