Victims Services Funding guarantee one step closer

Council is one step closer to victory to make victims services a funding requirement for municipalities after the NCLGA passed the towns resolution.

Currently, the province guarantees 50 per cent of the funding for victim services while municipalities only pay the rest voluntarily, which can short change funding for the service.

“Ultimately the people that would suffer are victims of crime, people who have had loved ones killed in a serious accident,” says councillor Phil Brienesse.”For example, our RCMP fee that we pay, we don’t get to deliberate on what that is. When they give us a bill we pay it. And that’s the way it should be when something’s an essential service.”

It’s now up to the Union of BC Municipalities to have the final say on mandatory funding.
