The Federal Government won’t decriminalize before they legalize marijuana.
The New Democratic Party has been critical of the move.
Member of Parliament Nathan Cullen for Skeena-Bulkley Valley says there should be amnesty for those getting criminal records for marijuana possession.
“We had a motion this week in the house to call for the immediate decriminalization of marijuana,” says Cullen.
The Liberals didn’t support that motion.
Trudeau wants to introduce legislation next spring and says he doesn’t want the drug in the hands of kids before it’s regulated.
The NDP disagrees.
“We simply don’t understand why the Liberal government won’t agree to this. it’s also a recommendation of the Canadian Chiefs of Police. So it’s not like it doesn’t have the support of local law enforcement,” says Cullen.
