Water main flushing in the Town of Smithers is set to start on Monday and continue until June 14th.
It will start with up to two milligrams per litre of chlorine being added to the water with the system being flushed two weeks later.
“We typically don’t chlorinate our water so the taste and odor might be a bit more noticeable to some residents,” said Communication and Engagement Officer Samantha LeBlanc.
The town added letting water sit uncovered for a short period of time or boiling it will correct the taste and odor.
It also recommended to run taps before doing laundry and to avoid using chlorine bleach to prevent staining.
Chlorine is added to help clear sediment out of the system during flushing.
“Residents may notice their water is a bit discoloured during flushing. You can run your taps a few minutes until it clears,” LeBlanc said.
She added anyone who may have concerns about taste or colour, including after the program concludes, should contact the town’s operations department.
