Firefighters, Police take a swing at baseball in Burns Lake

The Cops for Cancer Tour de North made a stop in Burns Lake last night as they travel from Prince George to Prince Rupert.

When they arrived, they had a chance to watch some baseball action as the Burns Lake Fire Department and RCMP held a Guns vs Hoses game.

“We have a local rider from the RCMP in Burns Lake who is part of the Tour de North and as a fundraiser to help him raise money for the ride, we decided to have the game,” said Fire Chief Rob Krause.

Firefighters were able to defeat the police 17-12 with the event raising $1,234.05.

Krause added the event was timed so it started when riders arrived in the village and included a welcome onto Lake Babine Nation territory.

“The crowd got to see [the cycling team] come in as they rode their bikes to the game and stayed to watch most of it before getting ready for supper,” he said.

The event was also part of a continued rivalry between the two first responder organizations with spectators enjoying the game.

Krause hopes to make the baseball game a regular event, happening every second year to coincide with when the Tour de North travels along Highway 16.

Riders left the village this (Monday) morning to stop in Houston for lunch and Smithers this evening.
