ICBC reminding drivers to monitor speeds in school zones

The school year is fast approaching, meaning more kids will be out making their way to school and back.

ICBC said for many kids, this is the riskiest part of their day, with data showing minors being more than twice as likely to be involved in a crash during the morning and afternoon school commute periods than other times of day.

According to the service, nine children are injured in crashes while walking or cycling every year in Northern B.C., with three children killed and 365 injuries across the province.

In September, the risk of crashes involving minors are 37% higher than the monthly average.

ICBC’s road safety team is partnering with Speed Watch volunteers and police at schools throughout B.C. during September, monitoring drivers’ speeds and remind everyone that school zone limits are back.

Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to give children a road safety refresher before the school year begins, including taking time to practice a safe route to school together.

A list of tips for drivers, parents and caregivers can be found on ICBC’s website here.
