Northwest Fire Ban lifted Wednesday at noon

As of noon on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, the open fire ban in the Northwest Fire Centre’s jurisdiction will be lifted.

According to an official statement from the Fire Centre, “campfires (no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide), outdoor stoves and other portable campfire apparatuses, tiki torches, burn barrels and chimineas” will all be allowed for recreational use again.

There will still be a restriction on Category 2 open burning (fires between 0.5 – 2 metres high and 0.5 – 3 m wide), Category 3 open burning (fires larger than 2m x 3m) until September 30th or until further notice. The restriction is also in effect for fireworks and firecrackers indefinitely.

Anyone having a campfire is recommended to have a “fireguard” by keeping flammable objects at a safe distance, and having a hand tool or at least eight litres of water close by.

The Northwest Fire Centre extends from just west of Endako to the North Coast and from the Yukon border to Tweedsmuir (North) Provincial Park. A map of the Northwest Fire Centre’s boundaries can be found here.
