Smithers council will be discussing a Development Variance and a Temporary Use permit for a new temporary interim shelter on Third Avenue at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The applications were made by BC Housing and would go into the same building as the previous temporary warming shelter that closed in March.
Public hearings for each will be held at the start of the meeting before council makes any decision.
On June 16, a special meeting was held about the shelter where council approved BC Housing’s proposal.
At the same meeting, council asked staff to look at an agreement with the shelter to phase out the existing temporary overnight shelter area once its complete.
If the agreement is approved, it would be followed by the interim shelter closing once BC Housing’s long-term supportive housing project on Alfred Avenue is complete.
A Form and Character Development permit for the Alfred Avenue project is also on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.
The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Smithers Town Hall, and can be watched on the town’s Facebook page.
