Robert Judzentis joins Smithers mayoral race

Two names will be on ballots in Smithers for the mayor seat during the election in October.

Local business owner Robert Judzentis said he wanted to run after hearing comments from others in the community.

“I talk to a lot of people with what I’m doing and there’s a lot of people that don’t like a lot of things that the community has been doing,” he said.

“I agree with them because a lot of stuff doesn’t make sense,” Judzentis said.

A main item he hopes to tackle is housing by requiring developments to build both multi-unit properties along with single-home.

“I’ve talk to a lot of people that can’t afford to live in Smithers. It’s cheaper for them to live in Houston and commute every day to go to work in Smithers,” Judzentis said.

He said another thing he hopes to do is increase communication with residents and get their feedback on what the town is planning.

Judzentis’ lack of experience as mayor or councillor is something he hopes to use as an asset.

“If you have someone that’s been there for a long period of time, in some ways they’re going to be closed minded because they are set in their ways,” he said.

Earlier this year, John Buikema announced he would be putting his name forward for the mayors seat.

In May, Gladys Atrill announced she would not be seeking re-election.
