Signed, sealed and delivered: Canada Post and CUPW sign off

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have signed new collective agreements, ending the bargaining process and providing labour stability through January, 2029.

For Canadians, the agreements reduce the likelihood of labour disruptions over the next several years, helping ensure reliable mail and parcel delivery. The deals also support plans for weekend delivery service, which Canada Post said is part of its effort to better meet changing customer needs.

The agreements cover the urban and rural and suburban mail carriers (RSMC) bargaining units. CUPW-represented employees recently voted to accept the tentative deals reached by the two sides. According to unaudited results provided by the union, 89 per cent of urban members and 85.9 per cent of RSMC members voted in favour.

For workers, the agreements maintain job-security protections and the defined-benefit pension plan while providing wage increases, enhanced health benefits and improved leave provisions.

The deals come as Canada Post continues to reduce door-to-door mail delivery in favour of community mailboxes and other delivery models, part of broader efforts to cut costs and modernize its network.

“Having these new agreements in place is critical as we move ahead with a multi-year transformation to return to financial sustainability and better meet the modern needs of the country.” said Canada Post. “It’s important that we move forward in a timely manner, while continuing to work closely with our bargaining agents and the Government of Canada.”
