Smithers and Houston swap Chief Administrative Officer position status

The District of Houston announced today (Wednesday) Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michael Dewar is stepping down from his role.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with an incredible team over the last couple of years,” said Dewar.

“While I am excited to pursue new opportunities, I will always cherish the memories and experiences gained during my time working with the community.”

He won’t be going far though, as the Town of Smithers announced Dewar is taking over as their CAO.

“I am very excited and honoured for this opportunity to work with the Mayor, Council, staff and the community in helping Smithers achieve its strategic vision,” said Dewar.

This hole opened in October as former Smithers CAO Dianna Plouffe announced her retirement from the town.

Dewar joined the Houston staff in 2022 and has helped to build out the existing leadership team, the 2022 municipal election, develop the Council’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, and support emergency preparedness.

“Although we are sad to see him move on, we appreciate the contributions he has made in the organization and community,” said Houston Mayor Shane Brienen.

Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill said she’s looking forward to his arrival, and they already have plans for when he jumps ship.

“His experience and training will be huge assets to the Town as we address the needs of our community,” said Atrill.

“We look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Dewar’s final day with Houston will be January 14th and will start in Smithers the next day.
