Smithers’ Main Street to see two events happen

Smithers’ Main Street will be going plaid on November 28th for Plaid Friday.

The annual event is run by the Smithers Chamber of Commerce as a local alternative to Black Friday.

“For years now, we’ve been trying to promote as much local as possible on that day and throughout the Christmas season,” said Chamber Executive Director Sheena Miller.

She added several businesses are planning activities and sales for the day with the Chamber giving away prizes through draws and those wearing plaid that evening.

“For example, Bulkley Valley Insurance Services and Bulkley Valley Credit Union, they’re doing free cookies for anyone [wearing plaid] through out the day,” said Miller.

In previous years, the Smithers Merchants would run Christmas in the Valley the Saturday after but is seeing some changes.

Instead, Christmas on Main will be happening about a week later on December 6th.

“It felt important to have a late night shopping night that was very clearly a shop local, and some of the businesses were very keen [Plaid Friday] for sure be on Black Friday,” said Merchants Head Organizer Lyn Nugent.

She added the two events tend to draw different crowds with Christmas on Main seeing more families and kids come out.

“Little bit of a separation to see if we can emphasize that. We’ll see how people will like it, maybe they won’t,” Nugent said.

The change of name from Christmas in the Valley she said was to reduce confusion with an event held by Mainerz on November 14th.

More information about Plaid Friday can be found on the Chamber’s website and Christmas in the Valley on the Tourism Smithers website.

In Houston, the Chamber of Commerce is also hosing a Plaid Friday event on November 28th Light Up at Steelhead Park starting at 7:00 p.m.
