The Town of Smithers will be providing the Legion a letter of support for funding to paint a Veterans Crosswalk.
It was discussed during Tuesday night’s meeting with the crosswalk expected to go across First Avenue at Main Street.
“This idea has been talked about for a long time,” said Legion President Kristal Grenkie.
“I’ve seen it was mentioned publicly with a lot of community response. We’ve had a few different members approach us and ask us to put this in gear.”
She added the crosswalk would be painted with the same quality as the Raonbow Crosswalk across Main Street at Second Avenue.
The letter would be used to apply for a grant to fund its creation with a memorial fund also being considered should the application fail, and otherwise used for maintenance.
Grenkie said the reasons it would be painted across First Avenue instead of Main Street include already having a view of it from a security camera and it is crossed for the Remembrance Day Parade.
“I feel it is going to be a respected crosswalk and hopefully nobody will treat it as badly as I know unfortunately the pride one gets sometimes,” she added.
Councillor Sam Raven said having the crosswalk cross First Avenue was beneficial as that street gets less traffic than Main Street.
“I like the new proposed location with its proximity to the legion and I think it will be very visible on Remembrance Day when we gather down that street,” said Councillor John Buikema.
Mayor Gladys Atrill also mentioned potentially wanting staff to look into a policy around how requests are handled and what can made council say yes or no.
