$1 million in grants awarded to UNBC researchers to pursue projects

Five UNBC researchers received nearly $1 million in federal funding for different projects.

The university said the funding is from Insight Grants through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and Insight Development Grants.

Planning and Sustainability Associate Professor Dr. Mark Groulx said his portion of the funding will go towards the field work for his From Barriers to Belonging project.

“We’re out doing accessibility assessments in outdoor spaces across northern B.C., really trying to develop a baseline to understand types of barriers that might prevent folks, whether they have a disability or not, whether they’re travelling as a family to really be welcomed into the culture and the health benefits of those outdoor spaces.”

Dr. Groulx’s research will get $436,879 of the total funding, spanning over five years.

Over the summer, Dr. Groulx and his team are determining how accessible the outdoor spaces they’re visiting are, then return in five years to see if any of the policies and investments made are improving accessibility.

The other four projects will receive different grant values for two year and five year projects.

More information on the other projects receiving funding can be found here.
