Audit of Bulkley-area forest operations raises concern

An audit performed on the BC Timber Sales Program (BCTS) last summer has raised a few issues.

The report found that BCTS had not been keeping up with proper maintenance codes in regards to several bridges and roads.

These issues were notified to proper officials, however, Chris Mosher, Director of Audits for the Forest Practices Board says they were never rectified.

“There were a few bridges that hadn’t been closed off properly on wilderness roads that posed a threat to the public.”

The problem arises because some areas are currently not known as “active” to the BCTS but they still pose a risk.

“Just because the areas are not active does not mean they shouldn’t be taken care of. In some cases, people just make their way around barricades and that could lead to some serious safety issues.”

Mosher says BCTS has a plan in place to do the work and that some maintenance is already being done.”

The public is asked to proceed with caution when using backcountry forestry bridges or roads.

Moose News is awaiting a response from the BCTS. More on their services can be found here.
