Bulkley River Forecast Update, May 17th

The Bulkley River and the Tributaries that flow into it surrounding Houston and Smithers are still under a flood warning.

Dave Campbell from the BC River Forecast Centre provides us with an update on how he sees the Bulkley River heading into the weekend.

“In terms of the Bulkley, we’re bouncing around peak levels due to the weather we’ve been seeing. When it’s warm, water levels rise, when things cool down, water levels drop. Despite that short-term drop, we’re expecting warmer weather heading into the weekend so things could potentially rise again. At this point, rain would make things difficult, however, we’re not expecting any precipitation this weekend. We’re not out of the woods yet and there is still significant risk through the Bulkley.”

Campbell says with things heating up, his crews have kept a watchful eye on the snowpack in the area.

“Surveyors were in the Bulkley Valley yesterday and the day before checking things out. Houston snowpack levels have dropped and a lot of the risk now is from the mountainous inflow. In the mid to upper elevations, there is a lot of snow left. It will still be another week or two to determine whether or not that remaining snow will play a factor.”

Due to the Bulkey River Flood Warning, the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako still has an evacuation alert in effect for the Ebenezer Flats, Electoral A area in Smithers. That story can be found here.
