Smithers council support Main Street Market pilot program

Three events could be in the works for Downtown Smithers this summer.

A letter from the Proton Foundation was received at the March 26th town council meeting requesting a letter of support for grant funding.

This would be used to apply for $20,000 from the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest Grant.

The events would be like events like Canada Day, the Alex Cuba Grammy Block Party, and Main Street Festival.

Director of Community Services, Will George, said at the meeting surrounding businesses are on board.

“There has been outreach to date to the downtown businesses with survey responses indicating the business community would be in favour of this and it would not be replacing the farmer’s market or anything that currently exists.”

According to the staff report, funding would go towards hiring musicians, entertainment rentals, and purchasing supplies.

As the events would be on Saturdays, concern was voiced about what impact it might have on the Farmers Market.

If the grant application is successful, the events would run July 20th, August 3rd, and August 17th, alongside other downtown events.
