Ground breaks on 16 new apartments in Witset

16 new housing units are on the way for Witset between three locations.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday (Tuesday) at the Seaton View Road location, where four of the units are being built.

“Today is a very special day,” said Paradigm Project Manager Carson Semesock at the event.

“This project symbolizes a new beginning and an opportunity for growth within the community.”

Two other constructions are also in the works on Park Road, each with six units.

Housing Manager Donna VanTunen said the waitlist length and overcrowding are issues in the First Nation.

“I started looking around for something to apply for, this came along, and I was so surprised when it was approved but I’m glad that it’s happening,” she said.

Funding for the project is coming from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

“It should be done by the end of December so hopefully it’ll be a Christmas gift,” said VanTunen.

Units will have three bedrooms with the six-unit complexes being two-story stacked apartments.
